Gothic Halloween Costume

Gothic Is Chic — Gothic Halloween Costumes

Originally, the word “Goth” referred to tribesmen from East Germany.  Today, the youth are more familiar with it referring to the goth subculture.  This can be a bit ambiguous for some, so we have a bit of explanation here.  A gothic Halloween costume is, not surprisingly, not too different from their usual dress.  Subscribers to the goth subculture tend towards the flatter side of emotion, being grim and generally unhappy.  Their style of clothing varies depending on the sub-subculture, if you get it.  Many agree that gothic fashion takes elements from Victorian, Elizabethan, BDSM, and punk rock themes, or any combination thereof.  The colors lean towards the darker end of the spectrum, meaning they like red, purple, violet, but most especially black.  Elements can range from top hats to creepy lace patterns, rips and holes to leather straps and buckles, leather and studs to rags and lace.  Gothic fashion also uses a certain eroticism or sexuality in its style of dress.

The Lilith Goth Fairy Teen Costume captures some of that gothic flavor.  Some may find this a bit strange though, since fairies are not exactly associated with goths.  Nevertheless, this costume works.  It includes a laced top, a flames-motif skirt, and small vinyl bat wings.  Worn with some striped leggings or dark stockings and boots, this ensemble evokes the image of a melancholy fairy.

For those who don’t think they can quite carry that particular look, they could try the Faces Skull Adult Costume.  It features a very fresh aesthetic style reminiscent of modern rock and punk fashion that still says “goth”.  The asymmetric shirt is emblazoned with a huge human skull pattern, and has a certain tattered feel without actually being so.  The lace arm-warmers are a nice touch, and certainly carry that goth style factor.  The form-fitting outfit is great for showing off curves without showing off too much skin.

Kids can also get in character with costumes like the Cheerless Leader Child Costume. This is a cheerleader’s outfit, except the colors are dark, and the motifs are ragged chic and creepy cool.  The outfit is great on its own, but if you really want to complete the look, you should go for the tights and glovettes.

The above costumes are for the ladies, but what about the men?  Men can get dressed up as gentlemen from the Victorian era, with top hats, walking sticks, and cloaks.  They could also go with something like The Anarchist Adult Costume.  This is the chains-and-leather kind of gothic fashion, with lots of metal.  Accessories like spiked belts and bracelets work great, and one cannot go wrong with strappy biker boots.

Considering that goths tend towards the somber and dark, graveyard and evil paranormal themes are not uncommon.  Zombies and vampires in particular are favorites.  Thus, zombie and vampire costumes can be classified as gothic Halloween costumes.  The gothic sense of fashion is surprisingly suitable for Halloween, since it does stem from themes associated with Halloween.  Have fun with a gothic costume this Halloween!
